Balladonia Roadhouse to Baxter Rest Area

When we began planning our journey we had a long list of things that we thought we would find difficult or problematic along the way, such as camping in crocodile country, the steep climb west of Cairns, carrying water for 3 or more days and riding along Australia’s longest straight piece of road.

The distance between Balladonia and Caiguna (Kigh - goon – a) is 188km and includes the 90 Mile Straight (146.6km) which is Australia’s longest straight road. Because of the distance and the high likelihood of head winds we planned for a bush camp along the way.

We have been asked to include more pictures of the two of us together on our web pages but this is not always that easy. However today, as we reached the sign at the beginning of the 90 Mile Straight, there were two girls from Holland in a camper van wanting a photo taken. So we took theirs and they took ours.

It turned out to be a very warm day with brilliantly blue skies but very comfortable in the shade and there was lots of that for the first 90km. So although it was tiring riding with the side wind we both enjoyed ourselves but so did the flies!  The ‘March’ flies we have encountered over the last few days are very persistent and inflict a nasty bite. As we rode along today we both had a flock of these beasts hovering around us a bit like the Andy Cap cartoon characters were drawn.

Zoom into the map and use the 'Satellite' layer to see our new location.

At the western end of the 90 Mile Straight

We think we have found a away to keep the flies away!

You see a lot of cars pulling tinnies as you drive around Australia but this fellow must have really liked his boat. Note the semi overtaking as we watch in the shade.

A bushfire south of the Eyre Highway. We were thankful the wind was blowing it south west and away from us.
