Maryborough, Childers

A very comfortable night last night under the sleeping bags as it was cold enough to stay covered all night long. We had a lot of condensation on the fly this morning, which slowed our departure as we waited for it to dry out.

As we had not had a chance to look around the Maryborough CBD yesterday we rode back into town and cycled around Portside. This is the old port area with many restored buildings from the mid to late 1800s and a statue of  - Mary Poppins. We are quickly discovering that nearly every town we travel through lays claim to someone notable being born there. Maryborough is the birthplace of P. L Travers the author of the Mary Poppins stories, hence the statue.

We were very taken with Portside and regret not having the time to spend a day or more here. Portside will be added to the ‘must come back to’ list. Watch a handlebar cam video of our ride through Portside.

Just outside Maryborough we came across the Sexie Coffie café and given it was morning tea time decided to stop for the mothers day special ‘coffee and danish’. As we were leaving we met Ron and Felicity from Hervey Bay and got discussing bikes and other things. It sounds like there are going to be some special celebrations for Queensland’s 150th anniversary at Portside in July.

We had lunch at the picnic area on the Burrum River. We always surprise ourselves as it does not matter where we stop we always find something to look at or someone to talk to.  On this occasion we discovered what we think is a Moreton Bay Fig growing out of a large eucalypt stump. It just looked like a big tree in a large pot.

The approach to Childers was quite hilly, (which was to be expected given the town is built along a ridge). Rather than using one of the caravan parks on each end of town we stayed at a motel in town so we could have a look around before we left in the morning.

Zoom into the map and use the 'Satellite' layer to see our new location.
